Munich at SXSW 2025

South by Southwest (SXSW) in Austin, Texas, is the biggest technology and creative festival in the world. From 7-15 March 2025, a delegation from Munich will attend.

South by Southwest (SXSW) is many things in one: technology and innovation conference, exhibition, comedy, music and film festival. SXSW brings together tech pioneers and innovators, start-ups and companies, creatives and artists from around the world. Over 75,000 participants are expected at the SXSW Conference alone. The conference program features over 1,000 key notes, panel discussions, workshops and meetups on 24 topic areas such as Artificial Intelligence, Climate Change, Health & MedTech, Games or Music & Tech.

The Munich delegation will be led by City Councilor Manuel Pretzl and will bring together startups, established companies, university representatives, creatives and a team from the City of Munich.

This year, the City of Munich and Munich Startup are partners at the re-launched German Haus @SXSW, which will host a diverse program of panels, pitches, networking events and music showcases from 8-12 March at Speakeasy, 412 Congress Avenue. Events involving the City of Munich

On Saturday, 8 March at 4 pm, the City of Munich is presenting a panel at the German Haus on “One Health: Data & AI for Humans, Animals and Planet”.

Prof. Jelena Spanjol, Head of the Institute for Innovation Management, LMU Munich, will discuss with

  • Prof. Frauke Kreuter, Professor of Statistics and Data Science in Social Sciences and the Humanities at LMU Munich, Co-Director of the Social Data Science Center (SoDa) at the University of Maryland

  • Florian Geiser, Co-Founder & CEO, Hula Earth

The panelists will discuss the interconnectedness of human, animal and planetary health and how an interdisciplinary One Health approach can help create healthy, sustainable and prosperous communities.

On Saturday, 8 March at 6pm, Munich Startup are co-hosts of the 48forward Startup Sunset Cruise on Ladybird Lake. Startups and investors are invited to good food, cold drinks and inspiring conversations while the sun goes down.

On Monday, 10 March from 9:30 – 11:45 am, XPLR:Media in Bavaria and the City of Munich are hosting the "Bavarian Networking Breakfast: A Morning of Media, Music, and Tech" at the German Haus. The morning will showcase the full range of media, music, film, art and creative technology that Bavaria has to offer. Munich-based artist Anne Wichmann aka She's Excited! will premiere her mixed reality performance LUMINESCENCE. Film industry experts and creatives will gather for a panel on the impact of AI on storytelling in independent filmmaking. And we will also hear the Beat of Bavaria.

Together with Munich Startup, munich business is supporting ten startups that were selected in an application process last year. The following startups were selected and will be part of the Munich delegation:

Caldo Worldwide

Caldo Worldwide is a curated online-only gallery selling contemporary art, game art, and publications by the most exciting established and upcoming artists. ExoMatter

The ExoMatter Materials R&D Platform generates a personalized shortlist of the most suitable materials for customers' applications. Drawing on materials data from numerous scientific sources and utilizing AI, ExoMatter enriches the data and allows customers to apply a wide range of multidimensional physical, chemical, and mechanical criteria as well as sustainability attributes and anticipated cost.  

ExoMatter is a spin off from the German Aerospace Center in 2022 and participated in entrepreneurship programs at the reputable Munich UnternehmerTUM. Some of Germany’s largest enterprises such as Bosch Siemens Haushaltsgeräte, Infineon, and Airbus rely on ExoMatter for their foundational work in materials development. This allows them to save resources by focusing their work on the most promising materials candidates identified. 

Hula Earth

Hula Earth are revolutionizing biodiversity monitoring through their innovative combination of self-sufficient BioT sensors (IoT mesh-sensor network) and satellite technology. They provide automated, real-time ecosystem monitoring that makes biodiversity measurable and investable.

Their solution enables continuous tracking of nearly 10,000 species while creating verified biodiversity credits. Working with leading institutions such as ESA and Fraunhofer, Hula Earth are transforming biodiversity monitoring from manual surveys to precise, data-driven action.

Already operational across 400 hectares in Germany and the UK, Hula Earth are scaling globally to enable nature-positive investments and verified conservation outcomes.

Neuraforge

Neuraforge is a Bavarian start-up with an academic background in IT security. Their AI-based multi-stage forensic analysis accurately and transparently detects image manipulation, allowing even partially manipulated images to be unmasked. Neuraforge targets both media and insurance markets worldwide. Their solution is robust when used in open set environments.

PULSETRAIN

PULSETRAIN extends battery life by up to 80 % and improves sustainability. They demonstrate how to reduce replacement and maintenance costs, optimize battery usage and performance for efficient energy use and enhanced functionality. PULSETRAIN has developed a breakthrough solution that combines the latest semiconductor technology and AI-based software to extend the life of electric vehicle battery packs, while enabling them to be reused in new applications through a simple software update, unlocking the future of circular batteries in mobility!

SPREE Interactive GmbH

SPREE Interactive develops and distributes VR entertainment systems. Their solutions transform shopping malls, theme parks and sports arenas into immersive entertainment venues that attract a new generation of users.

SUMM AI

SUMM AI is the “Google Translate” for Plain Language: An AI-powered tool that makes any complicated text accessible and understandable for everyone. SUMM AI works with government agencies and businesses to help them comply with accessibility regulations with the click of a button.

supernutural

supernutural is a 'Made in Germany' food tech innovator and builds nut butter machines for hotels, corporates, professional athletes, hospitals and every foodie. With their 'nuts as a service' concept supernutural offer a sustainable 360 degree solution in 40 countries.
